First GoBabyGo Workshop Gives Children Taste of Independent Mobility
With the support of community volunteers and sponsors, the Marianjoy Foundation hosted its first GoBabyGo Build Workshop on Oct. 17, 2015 to modify electric toy cars for 12 special needs drivers.
GoBabyGo, a program founded by researcher Cole Galloway at the University of Delaware, modifies battery-powered toy cars for children with disabilities to teach them about their own independent mobility and improve their social development. Since 2006, Galloway and his team have helped launch over 40 GoBabyGo chapters in the United States, Poland and Isreal.
In launching the program, Marianjoy becomes the only GoBabyGo chapter in Chicago's western suburbs. Supported by a community of donors who sponsored each of the 12 GoBabyGo cars, the Marianjoy Foundation plans to make the build workshop an annual event.
